Central Asia has created a deep impression in the minds of people who have visited this region that even in literature, writers draw inspiration from it, and conducted tours to mythical cities such as Shangri-La and Xanadu, both of which were said to be located in Central Asia around Kyrgyzstan.

This region has been hidden from the rest of the world in the past and travelling in Central Asia has been quite difficult due to its great mountain regions and vast grasslands. It was accessible only to travellers on the great Silk Road between China and Europe, and to armies of past conquerors coming from the east and the north. For this reason few came here, and tourism was almost unknown here till a few years ago.

While the intrepid few managed to visit, for much of the twentieth century, large parts of central Asia were forbidden areas for foreigners and Central Asians alike. Visas were impossible to gain without internal permission and extensive documentation. So there were practically no tours Available to travel in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

For today's tourist, all this has changed. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, tours come and go as they wish and the treasures of Central Asia are once more accessible for viewing for the first time in many centuries. Though some areas (namely Afghanistan) are troubled areas, other destinations are as peaceful as you want them to be! The three best travel destinations are Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.
